A remarkably beautifully produced and finely printed edition of this popular educational work, also published together with the dialogues. All Dutch editions from the 16th and 17th century are very rare, but most rare and desirable is the present edition, which is one of the finest examples of the high artistic quality of book production and typography reached by the artist-printer Paulus van Ravesteyn, who was active at Amsterdam from 1609 to 1655. He invited the most famous artist and woodcutter of that day, Christoph van Sichem, to provide him with a frontispiece and calligraphed half-titles and titles heading the text. Especially such woodcut title-pieces entirely consisting of various types of letters and still cut in wood, are rarely found.
Van Sichem made an excellent job of it. The book is mainly printed in Gothic, with small Italic types for the captions and the names quoted in the text. The fine-lined black borders on every page, designed with great artistic certainty, give the finishing touch to the beauty of the book.

Fine copy, with the bookplate of J.A. van Praag.- (Binding sl. browned).
