![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 's-Gravenhage, Isaac Burghoorn, 1651-1653. 2 works in 1 vol. Small 4to. Contemp. vellum. With large engraved monogram on title and charming woodcut in text in the first work, and engraved coat-of-arms on title and large folding etched portrait of the author by J.G. Bronckhorst in the second work. (16), 234, (2) pp. First edition of the libertine poetry of Matthijs van de Merwede van Clootwijk (ca. 1625-1680), here with another work contemporarily bound together. This second work, also in the first edition, here no longer published anonymously, contains more pious poetry as proof of the author's rewon virtue. Now his love-songs are more "spiritual" and include a poetical translation of the Song of Salomon, as well as of the Penitential Psalms. The fine etched portrait of the author is only rarily present. Matthijs van de Merwede van Clootwijk (ca. 1625-1680), was a member of an important Dutch noble family. After his studies in Leyden, he left in 1646 for England, then went to France and Italy, where he led a frivolous life in Rome, Venice and Naples. He also met Dutch painters and poets living there, like Adriaan van Essesteyn and Reinier Anslo. In 1650 he returned to the Netherlands to marry. The exact date of his death remains unknown, but according to rumours, he died from the terrible effects of the unbridled sensual life he had led in Italy. Fine copy.- (Name on top of the first title and more extensively on last blank; clean tear in portrait professionally restored).
Scheepers I, 127 (also both works in 1 vol.); Scheurleer, Liedboeken, 167 (both works separately listed); Waller 1193 (first work only); Sale Cat. J.L. Beijers, Jan. 1959 (Coll. Versnel), 414 (idem); Sale Cat. Nijhoff, Oct. 1900; Coll. J.L. Beijers, 2146 (idem); Sale Cat. Coll. Buisman 458 (first work in 2nd ed. of 1654).
