![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, C. Danckers, 1644. 2 works in one vol. Folio. Contemporary vellum. With engraved title, folding engraved general map of Switzerland by J. Janssonius and 74 engraved maps, plans and views on 54 engraved plates, one full-page, 51 double-page, and 2 folding, and engraved view on title-page of the second work. (6), 48; 81, (1) pp. Rare first Dutch edition of Merian's richly illustrated topography of Switzerland. The present Dutch edition of Switzerland appeared in 1644, 3 years after the first German edition. The work is dedicated to Gerard Schaep, burgomaster of Amsterdam, and Willem Backer, former burgomaster and treasurer, with their coat of arms. The historical description of Switzerland by Simler, published in Latin in 1576, is bound at the end, as usual, with an index of the plates printed on verso of the last leaf. However, the main interest of the work is in the engravings, as Merian had intended, nearly all double-page or folding, with finely executed plans of the towns, bird's eye views and profiles, mostly two to a page, of a high artistic level. Fine copy with clear impressions of the prints.- (Engraved title strengthened, small tear in one map; occasionally sl. foxed).
Wüthrich 4, 2; not in Schuchhard.
