Contemporary marbled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, triple fillet borders and gilt coat of arms on both covers, gilt inner dentelles, g.e. With several woodcut head- and tailpieces. (2), VI, 162, (4) pp. Satirical roman à clef and allegory on the Régence, the period just after the death of Louis XIV, with all involved personalities figuring under Oriental names. First published in 1729, the work is one of the earliest works of the economist Jean-François Melon (1675-1738). Melon is called the translator in the preface, but actually wrote this work himself. He was a French intellectual and an important member of the Court, who founded a literary society under the protection of the Duc de la Force. He also was regularly consulted concerning commerce and finance. He wrote his best known book in 1734: Essai politique sur le commerce, highly praised by Voltaire. Good copy with the gilt coat of arms of Louis Marie Alexandre, d'Duc d'Aumont on front cover.- (Binding rest., sl. foxed).
