First and only edition of this work on Australia by the German geographer Carl Eduard Meinicke (1803-1876). Meinecke was born in Brandenburg, went to university in Potsdam and Berlin, where he studied geography under Karl Ritter, and was appointed a co-operator of the gymnasium in Prenzlau in 1825. In 1838 he became a teacher at this school, and in 1852 its director. The present work deals with a wide variety of subjects concerning Australia, but particularly with the geography, geology, climate, flora and fauna of the continent. The work is concluded by an appendix which contains next to some tables an elaborate description of the Norfolk islands. What Ritter had done for Africa and Asia, his best pupil Meinicke did for Australia.
