Japan in the eyes of the last Dutch governor of Deshima (Nagasaki)
MEIJLAN, Germain Felix.Japan. Voorgesteld in schetsen over de zeden en gebruiken van dat rijk, byzonder over de ingezetenen der stad Nagasaki, door C.F. Meijlan Opperhoofd aldaar. Uitgegeven door Mr. J.H. Tobias. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, M. Westerman & zoon, 1830. 8vo. Original half green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Marbled green boards. Coloured title vignette heightened with gold, two folding lithographed plates of Japanese exorcism and a Japanese funeral procession. (14), 190 pp. First and only edition of a rare work on various aspects of Japan and Japanese life, especially in the city of Nagasaki, by Germain Felix Meijlan (1785-1831). Meijlan entered the service of the Dutch government (the successor of the Dutch East India Company) in 1806 and from 1827 to 1830 he was the head of the former company's trading station (factory) on the island Dejima (Deshima) in the bay of Nagasaki. The factory functioned as the basis of the Dutch trade monopoly for Japan from the seventeenth century till 1853. The work is divided into fifteen chapters treating of such diverse topics as the government of Japan and the city of Nagasaki, the island of Dejima, tea houses and temples, Japanese sociology the main and other religions in Japan, Japanese costumes, feasts and festivals, Japanese chronology, language, arts and crafts and the Japanese character. It was during Meijlan's period of office on Dejima in which occurred the notorious 'Siebold affair', which called for the utmost discretion on his part in order to reach a peaceful solution. Meanwhile he had begun to devote himself to a survey of Japanese foreign trade, the results of this study appearing posthumously in his Geschiedkundig oversigt van den handel der Europezen op Japan (1833). Good copy with some manuscript notes on page 11.
