Amsterdam, G. Portielje, 1826. 8vo. Contemporary red morocco, gilt geometrical border along the edges of both sides, spine  gilt, g.e., marbled endpapers. With 2 folding engraved plates, depicting cartographical  tools and geometrical figures, and several printed tables within woodcut frames in the text. (2), XIV, 206 pp.

First part (out of two) of a profound work on cartography by the German Professor in Mathematics in Altorf and Erlangen Johann Tobias Mayer Jr. (1752-1830), translated, edited and enlarged by M. Lemans (1785-1822). Lemans modified the original for the Dutch readers, by giving exact annotations for the geographical locations of several important places in the Netherlands, and by referring to Dutch reference works, instead of German books. Prof. Jacob de Gelder, professor in Leiden, who wrote the introduction to the present work, dated 27 November 1826 ( p. III-VI), praises the translation as being even better and more clear then the original.
The original work, written in German appeared in Erlangen in 1794: Grünliche und vollständige Anweisung z. Zeichnen d. Land-. See- und Himmelkarten; a second edition followed as the 4th part of his Practische Geometrie in 1804 reprinted in 1815 and 1828.

Fine copy.- (Two library stamps of the 'Koninklijke Akademie te Delft' on title).
Cat. Ned. Hist. Scheepv. Mus., p. 16; Bierens de Haan 2711 (mentions only an edition: Amsterdam, G. Portielje, 1816 (probably a misprint for 1826)); not in Crone Library.
