Paris, Pierre Ribou, 1706. 12mo. Contemporary red morocco, gilt and ribbed spine, red gilt title label, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With engraved frontispiece, 5 folding and 4 full-page engraved plates. (12), 252 pp.

First French edition published in France. The English original edition was posthumously published in Oxford, 1703 titled: A journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem at Easter A.D. 1697. Henry Maundrell (1665-1701) was chaplain of the English Levant Company at Alleppo from 1696-1701. From here he began at Easter 1697 a pilgrimage to Palestine and Lebanon. " He was a sharp and commonsensible observer; his short travel journal was one of the most reliable sources for the knowledge on the travelled region till far in the 19th century'' (Henze).''
The account contains the first description of Baalbek by an Englishman; both Baalbek and Palmyra seem to have been ignored by travellers before the end of the 17th century, and Maundrell provides accurate descriptions and illustrations of both'' (Balckmer). The plates show views, buildings and plans. This popular travel account was published in many editions: in French at Utrecht, G. van Poolsum, 1705 and a German edition appeared at Hamburg in 1706.

Good copy with an ownership's label at inside first cover of M. Boussingault, chef d' escadron aux chassuers de l' Oise, and with manuscript onwership's entry in pink ink and annotations on first endpapers of Paul Durand (1806-1882).- (Some waterstains).
