First edition of narrative of a journey to Brazil, Chile, Peru and the Sandwich Islands by Gilbert Farquhar Mathison. A third of the book relates to Brazil, the rest concerns Chile, Peru and the Hawaiian Islands. Information on Hawaii includes discussion of the natives, missionaries, government & the royal family, shipping and the King's speculation in the Canton trade. The story of the cannibal King of central O'ahu in this account became popular. It describes the cannibal king's stone platter, on which the King supposedly carved up his victims.
