Utrecht, Wilem Broedelet, 1699. 8vo. 19th century full-grained red morocco, double fillet gilt borders on sides. 16 pp.

Rare edition of the letter on the success of the Gospel among the American Indians, written by Crescentius Mather, a famous Minister from Boston and Rector of Harvard College, Cambridge, New-England, to Johannes van Leusden, Professor in Hebrew at Utrecht in the Netherlands. This letter first was published at London in 1688. In the subsequent Utrecht editions letters by Herman Specht and Adrianus de Mey from Ceylon, and by Franciscus Valentijn from Ambon, reporting on the progress of the Gospel among the Eastern Indians to the same Van Leusden were added.
A first Utrecht edition of 1693 was mentioned in the German translation from Mather's  letter, published at Halle in 1696, but was never seen. The first recorded Utrecht edition was from 1697, but the present edition from 1699 seems to be much rarer.

Fine copy, with a number of blank leaves bound in to fill the binding.
