(On board of the ship San Quince y Santa Julita), 1785-1788. Folio. Contemporary overlapping vellum with manuscript title on spine and traces of ties. With a beautiful allegorical watercoloured frontispiece. 93 ll.

Beautiful and very well preserved manuscript ship's journal, written in Spanish. The author of this log is Miguel Martorell y Alsina, steersman of the 'San Quince y Santa Julita', which sailed on October 11th, 1785 from Malaga. It arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay in december 1785, to set sail again on September 12, 1787 to Malaga where it arrived on the 22nd of January 1788. The manuscript is in a clear and well preserved writing and of technical sort. The steersman has written down all his observations concerning meteorologics, astronomics, winds, tides, progression of the voyage, other ships encountered during the voyage, different manoeuvres and some small accidents which occurred in the navigation.
The allegorical frontispiece is watercoloured in typical Spanish colours, representing the frigate in a  crowned coat of arms, surrounded by smaller coats of arms and maritime emblems like globes, canons and astrolabes, the whole encadred in a classical architectural decor with a manuscript text in black ink.

Perfect copy.
