Paris, Gabriel & Claude Martin, 1738. 8vo. Modern half marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco title label. With woodcut coat of arms on title and woodcut head- and tailpieces. (6), XX, 528, (58) pp.

First edition of this catalogue of 4785 items of the collection of Carl Heinrich Graf von Hoym (1694-1738), drawn up by Gabriel Martin (1679-1761), a famous bookseller/publisher and bibliographer. Martin had played an important advising role in establishing many great libraries all over Europe and his name is firmly associated with a new system of disposing libraries. From 1705 on he has composed no less than 150 catalogues among which the present catalogue is one of the most elaborate ones. After Graf von Hoym, who was a wealthy diplomat and Embassador to the Polish King August II, had committed suicide in 1738, his collection was sold in Paris, and was partly acquired by Colbert et Du Fay.
The collection consists of an interesting variety of subjects and is put in the order propagated by Martin: theology, law, sciences and art, litterature and linguistics, geography and history (ecclesiastic, catholic, monastic, profane, antique, modern, genealogic and litterary). The last 58 pages of the catalogue contain an alphabetical index of the authors.

Very good copy.- (Some insignificant foxing in text).
