With woodcut initials, tailpieces, one woodcut illustration in text of a whale, a crab, and 2 folding plates, one with illustrations of the capture of whales, plants, birds and fishes. 264 pp. Rare Italian edition of one of the rare voyages to the artic area during the 17th century, by Friedrich Martens (1635-1699). The work was translated from German by Jacob Rautenfels. The book contains detailed descriptions of Greenland and the flora and fauna of the arctic region. Pp. 202-264 are entirely dedicated to whaling containing also a poetical description of Greenlandish ships. Martens was the surgeon of the expedition which left Hamburg on the 15th of April 1671. Another edition published in Venice appeared in the same year. The original German work was published in 1675 in Hamburg, under the title Spitzbergische oder Groenlandische Reisebeschreibung gethan im Jahr 1671. Aus eigner Erfahrunge beschrieben, die dazu erforderte Figuren nach dem Leven selbst abgerissen (so hierbey in Kupffer zu sehen) und jetzo durch den Druck mitgetheilet. The work was also published in Dutch (1685), French (in the shape of an article in 'Recueils de voyages au Nord' in 1715) and English (as part of the compilation An account of several late voyages and discoveries to the south & north... in 1694). Very good copy.- (Some waterstaining and browning on title page and a few lvs.).
