On greatness of character
MARMONTEL, [Jean-François].Bélisaire. ![]() ![]() ![]() London, 1780. 12mo. Contemp. marbled calf, spine richly gilt, with triple gilt fillet borders on sides, g.e. With engraved frontispiece showing an aged and blind Belisarius led by a boy, and 3 full-page engraved plates. (4), 314 pp. Charming edition of the story of Belisarius by Marmontel. In a lengthy preface the author assures his readers that although he popularized the person of Belisarius, he nevertheless closely followed the Greek author Procopius for all historical facts. And he strongly denies the assumption, believed by many scholars, that Procopius also wrote "Anecdotes" or a "Secret History", slandering and ridiculing Justinian and his court. He, Marmontel, certainly did not use any of the information given in these writings. At the end an educational essay is added, called "Fragments de Philosophie Morale", discussing fame, famous people, and greatness of character. Nice copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
