The miracle of Amsterdam
[MARIUS, Leonard].Amstelredams eer ende opcomen, door de denckwaerdighe miraklen aldaer geschied, aen ende door het H. Sacrament des Altaers. Anno 1345. Door Boetius A Bolswert. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Antwerp, Hendrick Aertssens, 1639. Small 8vo. Contemporary vellum. With richly engraved allegorical title, with a sailing ship with the flag of Amsterdam at the top, and 16 full-page engraved plates by Boethius à Bolswert, including one with the crowned coat of arms of Amsterdam flanked by two standing lions, the others all lively illustrating the story of the miracle of Amsterdam, all with a six-line verse in Latin underneath, engraved on the plates. (16), 304 pp. One of the later editions, with the verses in Latin only, engraved on the plates, which were all newly engraved, but in reverse. This version of the popular mediaeval legend of the "Miracle of Amsterdam" had first been anonymously published in 1639 by Leonard Marius, Roman Catholic priest at the Begijnhof in Amsterdam, beautifully illustrated with engraved plates by Boethius à Bolswert. Leonard Marius (1588-1652), also called Goesanus after his place of birth, Goes in Zeeland, was an excellent scholar and a gifted preacher. It is said that he incited Vondel, the famous Dutch poet and playwright, to convert to Roman Catholicism. The book became quite popular and was several time republished, under the same address and date. The book is nicely published, alternately printed in Gothic and Italic type, and all pages put within double black-lined borders. The lively illustrative plates are all in fine and strong impressions. Some of the designs for the plates are ascribed to Rubens, to whom the book was dedicated. Good copy.
