Important for the development of "Rangaku" in Japan

Engraved allegorical frontispiece. (16), 351, (1) pp. Sixth edition of a French grammar and syntax, written in Dutch for use in Dutch schools by the school teacher Pieter Marin. Many generations of school children have learned French through this schoolbook. The first edition was probably published in 1697 (date of the privilege), the second in 1698, the 5th in 1705, all with the same publisher; no copies of the first, nor of the third could be traced. Many editions followed during the 18th and far into the 19th centuries. Pieter Marin was also the author of an important Dutch-French dictionary which was published many times and with different titles, also in a condensed form as the well-known Dictionnaire portatif. The grammar starts with a systematically arranged dictionary containing the most useful and common words, used in daily life, followed by a syntax and many dialogues, and ending with a (commercial) letter writer: a correspondence manual, and some 'bon mots' and histories in French. A fragment of a contemporary handwritten index is bound in at the end (2 lvs). This grammar has also played an important role in the development of the knowledge of Western science and civilization in Japan - the so-called 'Rangaku' - during the years from the end of the 17th century to 1853, when the Bakufu permitted a very restricted contact with only one European power: Holland. It was certainly intensively used as a manual to learn Dutch as well as French. On the first fly-leaf is an interesting ownership's entry: "Willy Boscawen 1765 given him by Martin Smith": probably the literary author William Boscawen (1752-1811), the son of general George Boscawen, and nephew of the admiral Edward Boscawen (DNB V, p. 420). On the verso of the fly-leaf Hans Buch has written his name. Good copy.- (Binding stained).
