Rome, Franciscus Moneta, 1654. Folio. Seventeenth-century strong ivory vellum, bound by Albert Magnus for the Dutch collector Paulus van Uchelen, sides with double gilt fillet borders, inner borders with the gilt crowns in the four corners, spine gilt with seven raised bands and seven lozenge-shaped ornaments, red sprinkled edges. Engraved coat of arms of Pope Innocent X, the dedicatee, on title, many small woodcut figures in text, engraved illustration of Carolus Magnus or Charles the Fifth. (4), LXIV, (8) pp.

Extremely rare and only edition of this monograph on the church Paolo fuori le mura, one of the most studied cathedrals in Rome apart from St. Peter's cathedral. Margarini copied meticulously over 700 Greek and Latin inscriptions which were cut in the wall of the church. Almost two decades later, in 1823, the cathedral was destroyed by fire and the inscriptions in this work are the only known copies of the epigraphs. This copy was once in the collection of the famous Dutch book collector Paulus van Uchelen. The similarity with other bindings of his books indicates that Van Uchelen had his own regular binder: Albertus Magnus.
Beautiful copy.
