Series of 19 plates from the famous 'Deliciae Batavicae' two of them with unknown captions added in manuscript!
MARCUS, Jacobus(Deliciae Batavicae. Variae elegantesque picturae omnes Belgii antiquitates, & quicquid praeterea in eo visitur, representantes, quae ad album studiosorum conficiendum deservire possunt. Jacobus Marci collegit & edidit). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1618). Engravings of ca. 80-85 x 130-5mm. pasted to leaves of 180 x 275 mm. Nineteenth-century half vellum, marbled boards. Oblong album with 19 engravings, partly copied from series of Claes Jansz. Visscher. Very rare set of 19 engraved plates illustrating the beauties of Holland, country-life, costumes, especially of the city of Amsterdam, from the Deliciae Batavicae, originally published by Jacobus Marcus (fl. 1607-1646) in 1616 in Leiden. The first edition is described in the Atlas van Stolk: containing 33 plates (numbered 14-46), most of them with a distich in Latin at the bottom (nrs. 15 and 19 with blank space underneath); the describer has also seen, however, a copy of the second edition of 1618 containing some more plates. Our copy contains the plates 24-25, 30-37, 39-46 (and one of the additional plates of the second edition) of the description in the Atlas van Stolk. Originally intended to used the series as an Album Amicorum, apparently there is no copy of the Deliciae alike, since the number of the plates was left to the buyer's choice. Compared with the description of the first edition in the Atlas van Stolk, this series lacks the preliminary plates for the use of the series as an Album Amicorum and the plates of Leiden. Plates 7-11 and 18-19 are free copies after the series 'Employments of North Holland' by Claes Jansz. Visscher from 1608 used as border illustrations around the 'Map of the land and waters of North Holland and West Friesland (see: Hollstein XXXVIII, 116a-123a). What makes the present series the more remarkable is the fact that the two plates without a caption underneath have Latin captions supplied in manuscript: - plate 15 (Atlas 33) has the caption "Fistula dulce canit volucrem dum decipit auceps; deceptam venuit noscere; [...]". - plate 19 (Atlas, p. 347; Hollstein 117a) has the caption: "Hic pisces varii fluviales atque marini Exiguo Batavis pretio a vectore parantur". The 19 plates are: 1. The foundations of the Roman castle at the beach near Katwijk: the 'Brittenburg' (Atlas 31). 2. Four Frisian farmers (Atlas 37). 3. Four couples skating (Atlas 30). 4. Two couples of farmers on their way to the market (Atlas 39). 5. Company of boys and girls making music at night (Atlas 34). 6. Knife fighters (Atlas 40). 7. Peat cutting (Atlas 46; Hollstein 123a). 8. Fish industry: gutting herring (Atlas 42; Hollstein 118a). 9. Laundry and bleaching fields (Atlas 45; Hollstein 122a). 10. Flax industry (Atlas 44; Hollstein 120a). 11. Agriculture, life on a farm (Atlas 43; Hollstein 116a). 12. View of the Amsterdam Harbour (Atlas 24). 13. A gentleman greeting a lady (Atlas 36). 14. Couple standing with their ships on the background (Atlas 32). 15. Couple in fancy costumes (Atlas 33). 16. Four man serenading (Atlas 35). 17. The Exchange in Amsterdam (Atlas 25). 18. Ship- and house-building (Atlas 41; Hollstein 119a). 19. Fish-market (in Amsterdam?) (not in the first ed.; Atlas, p. 347; Hollstein 117a). Good copy.
