How to protect and serve!
[LE MARCHANT, John Gaspard].Rules and regulations for the sword exercise of the cavalry. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [London], War office, T. Egerton, Military library, Whitehall, 1796. 8vo. Modern hald calf backing contemporary calf sides, remains of contemporary morocco letterpiece on spine. 29 engraved plates, all but 2 folding. XII, 90 pp. Official British military publication monogrammed J.G.L.M. in letterpress on page 90. John Gaspard Le Marchant (1766-1812) was a major general of the English cavalry, a teacher at the Royal military academy at Sandhurst and he developed a new cavalry sabre. He was killed during the battle of Salamanca, 1812. Some copies we traced of this work contain 98 pages and with advertorial leaf at the end and some are liked the present copy with only 90 textpages and without the advertorial leaf. Page 90 ends with 'finis' and the list of content indicating that it only goes up to page 89, suggesting that this is complete. Probably two different issues were published(?). With some occasional foxing, a few plates cut short and rebacked with an owner's entry '1797, 11 April Peter Rhodes on the title page.
Castle, Schools and masters of fence, p. Li; Pardoel 919 (under Fawcett, William; Thimm p.250.
