Paris, Imprimerie de la République, Nivose An XII (1804). 8vo. Contemporary blue wrappers. Tables  with alphabet throughout text. 104 pp.

First edition of this early specialized and important study on the Irish language and typography by Jean Joseph Marcel (1776-1854), director of the printing office Imprimerie de la République. This work starts with a short history on the Irish language. From p. 43 till  p. 88 a part is dedicated to the Irish alphabet with 18 characters exemplified in tabels and clarified with lenghty notes. The next chapter deals with abbreviations and their typography (pp. 66-75). Also the numbers and the names of the days and the months are given.
The two typefaces used were taken from the holdings of the Propaganda Fide press at Rome. The notes are printed in a typeface, taken from the famous first grammar of modern Irish (1677) and was used by Irish priests in Rome for printing the catechism (1676). However, it did not appear in many specimens in the press.

Very good untrimmed, large-paper copy.- (Last two lvs. with small waterstain in margin, small shelfmark pasted on inside frontcover, half title with ms. ownership's entry).
Bigmore & Wyman II, p.22.
