Very fine calligraphic exercise book, which probably belonged to a member of the House of Orange or someone connected with it
[MANUSCRIPT - HOUSE OF ORANGE].Orange desespoir. l'orange ie dechasse, Et ne veux plus avoir, Car L'amoureuse chasse, Ma donne desespoir. Calligraphic manuscript on paper. In French. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Netherlands, 17th century). Oblong 8vo. Contemp. vellum, spine gilt-lined with decorative gilt ornaments in the four compartments, with gilt double-fillet borders on sides with gilt branch of oak-leaves in the four corners and gilt central oval wreath of oak-leaved branches with pointe. With fine manuscript calligraphic specimen, mostly verses and moral reflections, in various writing-types, several with fine decorated or illuminated initials in gold, often on the theme of the Netherlands and the House of Orange with tulips, a tree of orange-apples, etc., other initials with calligraphic penwork with a human face, and on last leaves calligraphic exercises of flourishing headings, like "Madame", "Monsieur", "Mon tres Cher Papa", etc. (64) lvs. Very fine, completely finished, calligraphic exercise book, which probably belonged to a member of the House of Orange or someone connected with it. The contents point in that direction, as also does the choice of ornamentation, f.i. the orange-apple tree and the single colour used in the book, gold i.c. orange. The gilt decoration on the contemporary vellum binding also much resembles the decoration on the bindings of the Library of the Stadtholder Prince Fredrik Hendrik. A part of the manuscript is devoted to verses on the various colours, the poem on the colour "L'Orange" starting with: "Bienque souvent on n'ayt pu voir / Porte par quelque grand Monarcque / Je suis pourtant au desespoir / Destre du desespoir la marque". This part of the calligraphic book is preceded by the title "Blason des Couleurs", touched with gold, and surrouded by a finely drawn wreath of leaves with small flowers, the whole nicely gilt. Fine copy of an interesting writing book.- (Binding sl. stained, ties gone; first lvs. sl. soiled; few sl. stains and traces of use).
