Biography and bibliography of Francis Bacon

Contemporary marbled calf, spine ribbed and gilt with red title label lettered in gold, marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges. Title in red and black with engraved vignette with portraits of Bacon and Robert Walpole in medaillons, signed J.v.S. (16), 207, (1 blank) pp. Interesting biography and bibliography of Francis Bacon (1561-1626), English philosopher and statesman, by David Mallet (ca. 1705-1765), whose name is given in the translator's preface. Originally this work was written in English by Mallet titled 'Life of Bacon', (London, A. Millar, 1740) on the occassion of the new publication of the collected works by Bacon published at A. Millar in four volumes in folio at London in 1740, which was also compiled by Mallet. M. Pouillet translated the biography into English. Another edition of the French translation was published at The Hague by Adrien Moetjens in 1742. At the end of the present work a list of books by Bacon is included, listing the Baconiana in order of of appearance of the 1740 compilation. Fine copy.
