Praesidente ... D. Matthia Hovio archiepiscopo Mechliniensi. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Antwerpen, Christ. Plantijn (vols. 2-3: Johannes Moretus), 1571-1609. 3 books in 1 vol. Contemporary limp vellum, rests of ties, with title in manuscript on spine and front cover. With woodcut printer's device on first title and on the last leaf of the third book, and the woodcut coat-of-arms of archbishop Matthias Hovius (1542-1620) on the titles of book 2 and 3; some fine woodcut initials. 79, (1); 127, (1); 76, (4) pp. Three official acts of the synods held at Malines in resp. 1570, 1607 and 1609, published by Plantin (1) and Johannes Moretus (2-3). The first work containing the acts of the synod held in Malines from 11 June till 14 July 1570, is the first edition in 8vo published by Christoph Plantin, copies of which still must have been in stock as late as 1609. There is a letter by Plantin from 1586, complaining that still 200 copies of the octavo edition were unsold at that time. In the same year an edition in 4to was published (Voet 1061). The synod was presided by the bishop of Ypres Martinus Rythovius (1561-1583) in the name of Antonius Perrenot, Cardinal de Granvelle (1517-1586, since 1561 cardinal-archbishop of Malines). The colophon states that the book was printed by Christoph Plantin on 15 December 1570. The second work must have sold better, as it here is in the second edition. At the end of this work a "Placcaet ende Ordinancie" is added in Dutch (pp. 113-27), by the Archdukes Albert and Isabel, warning their subjects to observe the decrees of the Malines' Synod, and summing up the most important church-resolutions in 30 articles in Dutch. At that time the Southern Netherlands were again under Catholic Spanish rule, while the Northern Netherlands still fought the Spaniards to secure their Protestant Dutch Republic. The synod was held from 26 June till 20 July 1607 and was presided by the archbishop of Malines Matthias Hovius (1542-1620; archbishop since 1596). The third work is in first edition again. It contains the acts of the synod held from 5 till 6 May 1609 in Malines, also presided by Hovius. Good copies of a rare series, with ownership's entries of the Carmelites of Geldern (Ludivicus Kemma) on second fly-leaf and title; and the station near Wijhe (Limburg; 'Stationis Rmo. Catholica prope Wijhe').- (Binding sl. dam. at bottom of spine; library stamps on first fly-leaf; first book and end waterstained).
