Two very rare first editions of works on French heraldry. The first work gives an extensive account of the origins of the coat-of arms, followed by detailed descriptions of the coats-of-arms and the exterior additions, like crowns, casques, devices, banners etc. Furthermore there is a list of ancient and modern French and foreign orders of chivalry and an account on the distinction between the different kinds of nobility. The work is illustrated by many detailed illustrations of coats-of-arms.
The second work describes how to compose a tabard according to the ruling principles of heraldry in the 19th century. Everything concerning such a composition, from the armorial colours, the buttons and other ornaments, to the size and place of the coats-of-arms and special ceremonial tabards is described in detail. Illustrated with 6 full-page lithographed plates printed by Clarey-Martineau.
