First and only English edition on the chorography of Brazil
MACEDO, Joaquin Manoel DE.Notions on the chorography of Brazil. Translated by H. Le Sage. ![]() ![]() Leipzig, F.A. Brockhaus, 1873. 8vo. Contemporary three-quarter calf with gilt title on spine. With 8 folding tables. VI, 576 pp. First and only English edition of this work on the chorography of Brazil by Joaquim Manoel de Macedo (1820-82). This Brazilian novelist wrote this work at the request of the Brazilian government for publicity purposes on the occasion of the International Fair in Vienna in 1873. Subjects such as the astronomical positions and boundaries, climate, chief islands, bays and ports, the civilization, colonization, and the provinces of Brazil are extensively described. The Brazilian edition was printed in Rio de Janeiro, Typographia Franco-Americana, 1873. The French, German and English editions were printed in the same year by F.A. Brockhaus in Leipzig. Because the author had to write the work in haste, it contains many errors and was greatly criticized in Brazil at the time. Fine copy.- (Some occ. browning).
Cf. Borba de Moraes II, col 504 (the French ed. with 6 folding tables and 504 pp.)
