Facsimile of the edition of Amsterdam, 1811. Paris, La "Giberne", 1904. Folio. Half calf. With 12 colour-plates reproduced after the original coloured aquatints from 1811 showing the costumes of the Dutch Napoleonic Gardes d'Honneur. With explanatory text-leaves inbetween.

Well produced facsimile edition, published in 60 numbered copies only, of a famous military costume book. Originally published by Maaskamp at Amsterdam in 1811, the plates show the various costumes of the Dutch Gardes d'Honneur, young men of Dutch noble families chosen from the seven Departments the Netherlands were divided into by the French Emperor and King of Holland, Napoleon Bonaparte. This Garde d'Honneur was to receive Napoleon in the Netherlands and then to accompany Napoleon on his march into Russia. Special costumes were designed for the Garde d'Honneur of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Dordrecht, Leyden, Haarlem, Utrecht, Groningen, Arnhem, Drenthe, and Delft. The original is extremely rare, as it was only once published, and was not very popular after Napoleon's Russian expedition failed.

Good uncut copy.- (Binding rubbed, especially at corners and top and bottom of spine).
Landwehr, Col.Pl., 457; Colas 2937.
