Famous series of Dutch city views and costumes

With 68 fine engraved and/or aquatint plates, all hand-coloured, most of them in proof-state with captions in ink in ms., with views of Dutch cities and costumes, and index-leaf.

Amsterdam, E. Maaskamp, [ca. 1825]. Oblong folio (25 x 33 cm). Contemporary boards covered with dark-brownish paper with gilt border along the edges and gilt title on frontcover. Preserved in modern brown cloth fitted box. With 68 fine engraved and/or aquatint plates, all hand-coloured, most of them in proof-state with captions in ink in ms., with views of Dutch cities and costumes, and index-leaf.

Beautiful collection of 68 hand-coloured engraved plates and aquatints, published by Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834), and etched and engraved by Van der Meulen, Maaskamp, and others. Many of the plates are in proof state, still without the captions in Dutch and/or French.
The index-leaf begins with the title and address of the publisher, no further text is present. The index lists 64 plates; plates 14, 19, 27, and 50 as called for in the index (= 4 plates) are lacking in our copy. Landwehr mentions 8 extra plates, not listed in this inde index, numbered 2bis, 25bis, 26bis, 51bis, 65, 66, (and again) 66; 7 of these plates are present in our copy, only pl. 51bis (Village de Nieuwendam) is lacking.
One plate (pl. 67 in our copy, with a panorama and profile of the canal from Amsterdam to Den Helder - the 'Noordhollands kanaal') is extra added and not listed by Landwehr. This plate is cut from the 'Kaart van het Kanaal' and mounted; in manuscript is added: the title, identifications of the church towers seen on the horizon, the names of the two ships in the profile of the canal and the date: '16 December 1824'.

The collection, issued as the Tableau des principales vues, contains several series of plates, some of which had been published by Maaskamp before:
- Evert MAASKAMP, Nouvelle statistique historique d'Amsterdam (Amsterdam 1812; Landwehr, Col. plates, 365): 11 of the 12 plates present in our copy: resp. nrs. 20, 8, 1-2, 16, 15, 9, 12, 11, 17, 18 (only nr. 2 (= Index 19, Intérieur du Musico Pyl is lacking). The plates have French printed captions and are ca. 152x188mm). Nr. 21 of the famous stained-glass windows of the Amsterdam Old Church, belongs probably to the same series, bur is not listed by Landwehr.
- G. JOHNSON, Karakterschetsen, zeden en gewoonten van Nederlandsche mannen en vrouwen ... (Amsterdam, E. Maaskamp, 1816; Landwehr, Col. plates, 323: 'Description of the costumes and costums of the Netherlands particularly in the area north of Amsterdam. It contains ... 9 aquatint plates by W. van Senus after H. Greeven'). All nine plates present in our copy, except for nr. 5 (the house of Tsar Peter de Great: replaced in our copy by three other plates of the house of the Russian Tsar); it are the plates 61, 60, 56, 59, 57, 62, 55, and 63.
- a series with Dutch and French captions added in manuscript, ca. 150x180-230mm, most of them signed 'Van der Meulen': nrs. 2bis, 66, 24-5, 26bis, 25bis, 47, 53-4, 58, 65-6.
- a series with Dutch captions, with a faint French title later added, ca. 140-150 x 180-234 mm.: 3, 4, 6, 28-9, 31-32, 34-6, 26, 41, 49, and 51
- a series with Dutch captions, with the French title added in manuscript, ca. 150 x232-8 mm.: 5, 7, 10, 13, 23, 30, 33, 37-40, 42-6.
- a series with French captions with printed captions in Dutch, ca. 150x180mm.: nrs. 22 (by A. Lutz after B.Y. van Hove), 52 (by W. van Senus after E. Maaskamp).
- a series with Dutch captions with the French titles added in manuscript, ca. 85-90 x 145 mm.: 55-57.
The plates with captions added in manuscript, apparently are in proof-state.

Our copy has an interesting provenance: on the first fly-leaf is written: "Lt.Col. Nahuys to his dear friend Miss Ellen Hodges. Amsterdam 20 November 1825". This is Hubert Gerard Baron Nahuys van Burgst (1782-1858), brother in law of Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck, who after having fought at the battle of Waterloo, departed for the Dutch East Indies as Lieutenant-Colonel, where he was appointed Resident of Djocjakarta. In 1823 he returned to the Netherlands, where he married in September 1824 for the second time. His wife died, however, already in August 1825. On the 20th of November of that year he presented our copy to Ellen Hodges, whom he married the next year in London on 28 December 1826. In another hand is added: "Aan mijn dierbare achterneef en naamgenoot Catharinus Bissink, ter herinnering aan zijne liefh. oud-tante Kitty Babut du Mares Nahuys v. Burgst". This is Catharine Nahuys van Burgst who had married Jules Babut, seigneur du Mares (1827-1895).

Binding slightly damaged. Beautiful collection in good condition.
