[MAASKAMP, Evert, Jacques KUYPER & Louis PORTMAN].Representations of dresses, morals and customs, in the Kingdom of Holland, at the beginning of the nineteenth century. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Printed for E. Maaskamp (and Colnaghi & Co, London), 1808 (series of plates: 1811). Large 4to. Contemporary half leather with gilt title on spine, boards covered with marbled paper. Allegorical frontispiece and 20 magnificent full-page hand-coloured engravings. 24 lvs. Unrecorded issue of one of the English editions of the first Dutch book on costumes dealing with the different costumes in the various provinces by the publisher Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834), Afbeeldingen van kleeding, zeden en gewoonten in de Bataafsche Republiek ... which was originally published in five installments from 1803 to 1807. The accompanying texts as well as the captions on the originally 16 plates were in Dutch and in French. Re-editions appeared in (1808?) and in 1811 with 4 additional plates (Nrs. 17-20). An English edition with the same plates with the Dutch/French captions was published by Maaskamp in 1808. Another edition with English texts was printed by J. Barfield in London for Colnaghi & Co, also in London in 1810 with both the addresses of Maaskamp and Colnaghi engraved on the plates, except for plate 1 which has the address of Maaskamp only. This unrecorded issue has the title and 23 English text leavers of the 1808 edition, combined with the 20 plates from the Dutch/French edition of 1811, all plates with the date '1811' and (except for plate 1 again) with both addresses of Maaskamp and "Colnaghi & Co, Cockspur Street, No. 43". The plates are engraved by L. Portman, under the direction of J. Kuyper ('J. Kuyper direx.'), after the drawings by J. Kuyper, the famous Dutch painter J. Pieneman, G.T.S. van Os (Nr. 9), C.F. Bounach (Nr. 7 and 10), C.J. van Slangenburgh (Nr. 11), Van Oosterhout (Nr. 12), D. de Keyser (Nr. 13), A. Prince (Nr. 14), D. de Koning (Nr. 15), Amersvoort (Nr. 16), C. Overman (Nrs. 17-18 and 20) and J.W. Caspari (Nr. 19). All plates are very exquisitely coloured by hand. Allegorical frontispiece in a lozenge within a decorated border represents "La Muse du dessin remet son ouvrage à Mercure". The plates depict: . An elderly lady and a young girl going to church. . A fish-woman and tradesman in Amsterdam. . An undertaker announcing the death of a relation to a lady standing in front of her house. . A servant-girl and milk-girl in Rotterdam. . A young girl playing the harpsicord with her mother knitting in the Moravian society at Zeist. . A Moravian brother at Zeist offering for sale a needle box to a North Holland girl. . A Captain and his wife in their best dress, just leaving the church. . A Fisherman and his wife on the island of Schokland darning his net. . A Fisherwoman of Scheveningen selling shrimps. . Two young girls on the ice in Eastern Friesland, one on a sledge and one on skates. . A country girl in Eastern Friesland selling butter. . A country girl accompanied by a young man carrying milk in a jug somewhere in Gelderland. . Two inhabitants of the island of Walcheren in their best dress. . A woman and man carrying butter and eggs on their way to Zierikzee on the island of Schouwen. . Neighbours in their best dress on the island of Zuid Beveland. A peasant and girl from Kromhout on their way to 's-Hertogenbosch. . Two young women from North Holland going for a walk. . A girl from North Holland sitting on a bench and reading a love letter. . Two women from the island of Marken. . A woman from Katwijk and from Volendam, both in their best dress. The extensive accompanying texts describe the costumes and people on the plates in their culural, historical, moral and social context in a very interesting way. Good copy.- (Spine damaged, some light browning).
