Rare re-issue of a nice series of hand-coloured plates showing various Dutch costumes and scenes from Dutch daily life, including ice-skating, a maid pouring milk, and a young girl playing the piano, engraved by Lodewijk Portman (1772 - ca. 1813), who excelled in illustrating customs and folk-lore. These plates were published and re-issued several times by the famous firm of Evert Maaskamp in Amsterdam, specialized in publishing very beautiful hand-coloured plates of costumes, landscapes and views.

Originally these illustrations were published in 4to format in Maaskamp's Afbeeldingen van de kleeding, zeden en gewoonten in de Bataafsche Republiek (Amsterdam, (1803-1807; Landwehr 358), the second edition: Afbeeldingen van de kleeding, zeden en gewoonten in het Koningrijk Holland (Amsterdam 1808); and the English translation (Representations of dresses, morals and customs in the Kingdom of Holland (Amsterdam, Maaskamp, 1808; Atlas van Stiolk 5888), the thrid edition: Afbeeldingen van de kleedingen, zeden en gewoonten in Holland (Amsterdam 1811), and fourth edition: Afbeeldingen van de kleedingen, zeden en gewoonten in de noordelijke provincien van het Koningrijk der Nederlanden (Amsterdam 1823), the first two of these editions with 20, the last with 24 plates.
The present smaller copies of these illustrations in 8vo, signed by the same artists, were first published (together with many other plates) in the Reis door Holland, in het Jaar 1806 (-1812) (Amsdterdam, Maaskamp. ca. 1814; Atlas van Stolk 5890), re-issued separately in Maarlamp's Costumes, moeurs et habillements dans les Pays-Bas Unis (Amsterdam, 1814?), again in ca. 1830, and in our present edition, here only preceded by a newly set table of contents with the captions in French of the 1814 edition of the Costumes, moeurs ..., whereas the French captions of our edition are slightly different, f.e. (3) "Epouse d'un marchant de vin & un prieur de convoi" in stead of "Un prieur d'Amsterdam annoncant un déces à une Cabatertière".

Very good copy.- (Binding sl. chafed).
Landwehr, Coloured plates 368, cf. 363-7; Atlas van Stolk 5891, cf. 5887-90; Lipperheide 956; Colas 737.
