2. Auflage. Berlin, E. Gross, 1865. 4to. Contemporary half calf. 17 lithographed plates of which 8 are handcoloured, depicting costumes, views and an Indonesian goddess and 1 partly handcoloured lithographed map. (4), 286 pp.

Second German edition of a description of the Island Java. The work is divided in 3 parts, describing respectively the western, middle and eastern part of the island. In those descriptions the different residences with their plantations are treated. The work contains 3 handcoloured lithographed plates of costumes, 1 tinted lithographed plate of a sculpture and 13 handcoloured or tinted lithographed views, depicting some of the vulcanos on the island and views of Batavia, Bantam, Buitenzorg etc. Three of the handcoloured plates (Vulkan Gedeh, Vulkan Guntur & Vulkan Merapi ) are after Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864). Two other handcoloured plates are after subjects in Van Braam's Vues de Java (Amst., 1842). The majority of the other plates in the book are after plates in C.W.M. van de Velde's Gezigten uit Neerlands-Indie (Amst., 1843-45) and Hardouin and Ritter's Java, Tooneelen uit het leven (The Hague, 1853-55). The handcoloured plates are all unsigned but the tinted plates are by W. Korn. Berlin.

Good copy with ms. ownership signature on title.- (Binding somewhat rubbed; some browning and some captions under the plates sl. cut short).
