(8), 563, (1 blank) pp. Dutch edition, anonymously published, of the most popular novel "avant la lettre" by John Lyly (1554-1606), English dramatist and literary author. The book relates the travels and love affairs of a young man from Athens and includes the correspondence with his young friend from Napels. The author makes a great show of his own wit and wisdom in amusing stories, anecdotes, proverbs and dialogues, including long reflections especially on love but also, at the end, on education and morals. The young man from Athens, highly talented and cultivated, represented the Oxford-man, and Napels stood for the Italy-minded High Society in London. This satirical romance in prose, first published in 1578 under the titel "Euphues, The Anatomy of Wit", played an essential part in the evolution of the English novel. In the 17th century the book also became popular in the Netherlands, Buisman recording three editions of the present translation, from 1668-1682. Still, copies of all editions are very rare. Good copy.- (Binding sl. soiled; old owner's ms. entries on first blanks).
Buisman 1520; Muller 104 (the Meulman-copy); De Vries 183* (idem); Gieles-Plak 294; Sale Cat. Coll. Buisman 622; cf. Scheepers II, 559 (ed. of 1668); Sale Cat. J.L. Beijers, Jan. 1959 (Coll. Versnel), 401-402 (ed. of 1668 and 1671).
