Counteracting works that mislead young and inexperienced notaries
LYBREGHTS, Arent. ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Erven van J. Ratelband, 1742. 2 parts in 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary vellum. Both titlepages printed in red and black. (44), 376, (56); (2), 240, (32) pp. This first edition of a practical guide for notaries was written to counteract the works on the subject which would mislead young and inexperienced notaries. Lybreghts (The Hague, 1714 - 1758) had dealt with the theory in his Redenerende vertoog and so includes very few theoretical points. In fact the Redenerende practycq is a criticism of his contemporary de Coeur, who had incensed him by writing in his Stijl der notarissen that Lybreghts' writing in his Redenerende vertoog was too lengthy. This was not left unanswered - for every practical example Lybreght uses, he cites de Coeur's equivalent. These examples are usually followed by lengthy and often sarcastic criticism of de Coeur's writing and equally lengthy reasons for his own being better. With the second publication of the Stijl der notarissen, de Coeur again criticised Lybreghts, who in subsequent publications of the Redenerende practycq wrote of the absurdity of republishing de Coeur and accused him of plagiarism. Good copy.
