Leyden, Typis auctoris (Elie Luzac), 1749. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, sprinkled edges. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. XVIII, 92 pp.

First and only edition of the earliest work of the lawyer, historian, philosopher and printer Elie Luzac (1721-1796), published from his own printing press just after he finished his studies at the university at Leyden. He dedicated his treatise to his professors Joannes Alberti, Joannes Conradus Rucker, Andreas Weiss, Hieronymus Gaubius, Tiberius Hemsterhuis, Petrus Musschenbroek and Joannes Lulofs. He studied law, classical languages with the famous Hemsterhuis and physics with Musschenbroek and Lulofs. His entire life he stuck to the principles and philosophical systems of Leibnitz and Wolff. Since 1744 Luzac had his own printing house. Many of his works, among which his Hollands rijkdom, behelzende den oorsprong van den koophandelen van den magt van dezen staat. 4 vols. (Leiden, 1780-83) is the most famous, were printed on his own presses. Being a jurist and being very interested in natural law and the political, ethical and philosophical questions involved, he published this treatise in which he warned for too rash reactions to hostile brutalities to avoid war and by implication the end of the normal state.
He is also known for the fact that he, as a man of the Enlightment who had published several controversial treatises, promoted the freedom of press in several pamphlets.

Good copy.- (Hinge weak).
