Rare first complete edition of this collection of 87 lithographed plates with views on manors and stately homes in Utrecht and surroundings, designed and lithographed by the painter and draughtsman Petrus Josephus Lutgers (Amsterdam, 1808- Loenen aan de Vecht, 1874), and printed by J.D. Steuerwald. In 1862 an edition was printed with only 71 plates. The two facsimilé-editions (published in resp. 1970 and 1979) are as a matter of fact based on this 1869 edition.
The region between Utrecht and Rhenen was - and is - justly called the 'Stichtse Lustwarande' for its large number of country estates and carefully planned and designed parks and gardens in the fashionable English landscape style, often designed by the famous landscape architect Zocher. The well-known Dutch romantic poet W.J. Hofdijk (1816-1888) wrote the explanatory texts to the plates.
Lutgers is famous for his works with lithographed views of manor houses and castles, and surroundings of other Dutch cities, like Haarlem: Gezigten in de omstreken van Haarlem (1837-1844), and Amsterdam: Verzameling der fraaiste gezigten van Amsterdam (1782).
