Groningen, Hindrik Vechnerus, 1751. Sm.8vo. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and gilt in compartments with red title-label lettered in gold, gilt binding edges, marbled edges. (16), 340, (20) pp.

First edition of a basic course on the theory of music, according to the author necessary for the correct practising and performing of music. The book does not teach a particular musical instrument but wants to introduce the student of music into the subject after which he can freely make his own choice regarding the instrument. Chapters are devoted to music in general, the science of music, musical notation, interval, harmony, the formality of music, music history, its aim and value, etc.
Jacobus Willem Lustig (1706-1796), was one of the most famous and prolific Dutch authors on music of his time. He especially studied Bach's music and went to hear Händel's concerts in the Italian Opera at London. He started as organist in Hamburg and in 1728 he won the contest for the post of organist at the St. Martini Church in Groningen. His most famous pupil was Olthoff.
