(8), 436, (2); (4), 324, (1) pp. Second edition of an important work on the history of the kingdom of Siam (now Thailand) by Simon de La Loubere (1642-1729). La Loubere studied law and became secretary of the ambassador in Switzerland, M. De Saint Romain. La Loubere was sent on an embassy to Siam by Louis XIV to convert the natives into catholicism. He departed from Brest, March 1st 1687 and arrived at Siam in 27 September 1687, where he only stayed for three months. The mission was a failure. However, in his account on his voyage he proves to be a keen observer. His detailed remarks on the customs, institutions, history, religion, government, trade and commerce of Siam were confirmed in following travel accounts. The work contains a separate chapter on the Chinese abacus. La Loubere compares the Chinese with the Siam culture and criticizes the Chinese historians. Untill today it is still an important reference work on the culture and civilisation of the only country which had not been colonized by an European country. The original edition was published in the same year at Paris by Coignard. Fine copy, with the armorial bookplate pasted on verso frontcover: "Antonius Ernestus Burcardus Sacri Rom: Imperii et regni Bohemia Liber Baro de Birckenstein & c.''.
Cordier, Indosinica, 722; Lust 115 (first edition); China Illustrata 92.
