French military science, ordered by Le Roi Soleil
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Estienne Migon Chez Toussainct Quinet, 1647. Folio. Contemp. dark brown calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with gilt borders on sides with small gilt ornament at the four corners and in center. With title printed in red and black, 4 half-titled in red and black, some fine woodcut headpieces and initials, 48 full-page engraved plates of French infantry-men exercising with musket (35) and pike (13), after the models of Jacques de Gheyn, and 400 full-page, several folding, woodcut plates with battle-arrays, all printed in red and black, partly in red, black and yellow. XII, 459 pp. First edition of a practical text book for use of the French army commanders, composed by the French Marshall and Commander of the French Royal Guards by order of Louis XIV, who wanted to establish a strictly uniform military science for his whole army. Jähns, rather chauvinistic, curtly mentions the work as an imitation of Wallhausen's works, which may be partly true as far as military basic principles are involved, but for its numerous practical applications, and especially for its rich illustration of 17th century French army-tactics, Lostelneau's work stands on its own. The work also is of special interest as an example of early colour printing in books, with no less than 400 colour printed plates. Good copy of a rare work.- (Binding sl. rubbed; restoration to lower margin of title; first and last lvs. sl. browned; few sl. stains).
Jähns II, p. 1293; Von Lipperheide 2080.
