With fine engraved frontispiece showing Philippe Quarll with his pet monkey at work on his deserted island, and with folding engraved map. (12),368, (4) pp.

Rare early edition of the French translation of "The Hermit: Or, the Unparalled (!) Sufferings and Surprising Adventures of Mr. Philip Quarll An Englishman. Who was lately discovered by Mr. Dorrington a Bristol Merchant, upon an unhabited Island in the South-Sea; where he has lived above Fifty Years, without any human Assistance, still continues to reside, and will not come away", first published at Westminster, in 1727. Since the original preface, here also included in translation, was signed P.L., the author is now identified as Peter Longueville.
