LOESCHER, Valentin Ernst.Historie des Römischen Huren-Regiments der Theodorae und Maroziae, in welcher die Begebenheiten des zehenden Seculi und Intriguen des Römischen Stuhls ausgeführet werden, nebst einer längst verlangten Einleitung zur Histor. Contemporary vellum. Title printed in red & black and 3 engraved folding maps of Europe and parts of Germany. (6), 354 pp. Rare first and only edition of this anti-papal work by the German theologian and polyhistor Valentin Ernst Loescher (1674-1749). Loescher became Doctor Theologiae in 1700 and Professor in Wittenberg in 1707. He was an orthodox Lutheran theologian and vicar who struggled against pietism and Enlightenment. He was very interested in Hebrew language and literature and classical philology. In 1701 he founded the first theological journal in Europe.this work he fiercely opposes the Holy Chair and everything connected with the pope, papacy and papal worldly power. He focuses on the circumstances during the first half of the 10th century when Marozia and her mother Theodora governed great parts of Italy during the deepest moral and political decay of the Holy Chair in Rome. Marozia had a very bad influence on Pope Serge III (904-911) with whom she had even an affair: the later pope John XI supposedly was their son. During her fight with pope John X she gained victory and she condemned the pope to death. After that struggle the Holy Chair was freely to her disposal and the popes Leo VI, Stephan VII and John XI were successively appointed by her. The book is full of juicy stories on papal intrigues and conspiracies. Loescher also gives a short introduction to Medieval history illustrated with three maps, genealogical tables and as much proofs and evidences against papacy as he possibly could find. Good copy. - (Some insignificant browning).
Bayer. statsbibl., AK 1501-1840, 24, p.79; BMGC lists 1 copy; NUC (1 copy).
