First French edition in this form, abridged for children and published in Hachette's Bibliothèque Rose Illustré, of the famous voyages of exploration in Africa by the English missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873), between 1840 and 1864. Livingstone himself had left again for Africa in 1866, where he was found by Stanley in 1871, so at the time of the present publication Livingstone's whereabouts were uncertain which must have made the reading all the more exciting.
