A happy new year from the orphans of Leyden

[LEYDEN - ORPHANAGE].

Brill, 1847-1861. 13 leaflets. 8 pp. each leaflet.

In the nineteenth century, every new year a song was written by a popular Dutch poet in order to raise money for the orphans of the Gereformeerde Weeshuis. Here collected are thirteen leaflets published between 1847 and 1861 by local publishers Du Mortier and Brill, containing songs by Willem Jacobsz. Hofdijk, Edmond Willem van Dam van Isselt, Hendrik Cornelis Huijser, Eliza Laurillard, Jacob van Lennep, Hendrik Tollens and others.
The orphans then were allowed to sing and sell the text of the song from house to house and collect money in closed money-boxes. On all leaflets an announcement is printed on verso title, explicitly stating  that the money will not be used for the orphanage in general, but that the money will be divided among the orphans themselves.
From 1853 onwards, the leaflets were titled "Nieuwjaarsgroete" instead of "Nieuwjaarslied", probably because the orphans no longer were given time to sing their mostly very lengthy songs, and people could just give the money for the text-leaves.
Collections as extensive as ours are rarily found.

Fine set.- (Leaflet for 1858 in contemp. wrappers, sl. browned).
Not found recorded in the relevant collections.
