One of the three rare issues of the corrected second edition of the Book of Psalms with the Hebrew text edited by Johannes Leusden facing the Latin translation by Santes Pagninus (1470-1541). This Psalm edition was edited by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699) who was since 1651 extra- ord. professor and since 1653 professor of Oriental languages and Hebrew at the University of Utrecht, and an acknowledged authority in the field. He was a dedicated follower of Prof. Voetius and his fame drew many students to Utrecht. He was in correspondence with Crescentius Mather, a famous minister from Boston and Rector of Harvard College, Cambridge, New-England, about the progress of the mission among the American Indians. Leusden has dedicated his edition to this Mather, "a vigilant Minister of the Divine word", who converted many Indians to Christianity, 24 of which became a minister, as Leusden states in his dedication, which is - according to Muller a "valuable record of the early progress of Christianity among Indians of New England ... not mentioned by any bibliographer".
The first edition of Leusden's Hebrew Psalm text has been published by Joseph Athias in Amsterdam in 1666 with the title Sefer tehillim (= Liber Psalmorum).
Next to this 1666 Hebrew edition a Hebrew-Latin, a Hebrew-Dutch and a Hebrew-English version was published in the same year.
The two other issues of our 1688 edition have the imprints Utrecht, for W. vande Water, and London, for S. Smith.

Fair copy with library stamp of W. v. Koeverden on title.- (Binding half loose, one leaf missing).
