Psalms in Hebrew. Also an important Americanum
LEUSDEN, Johannes (editor). The book of Psalmes. With the new English translation. ![]() Utrecht, John van de Water, 1688. 12mo. Contemporary calf, blind-stamped sides. In cloth box. [8], 240, [2] ll. Very rare first edition with Utrecht imprint, of the book of psalms with the Hebrew and English text printed in opposite. This book was edited by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699) who was since 1651 extra-ord. professor and since 1653 professor of Oriental languages and Hebrew at the University of Utrecht, and an acknowledged authority in the field. He was a dedicated follower of Prof. Voetius and his fame drew many students to Utrecht. He was in correspondence with Crescentius Mather, a famous minister from Boston and Rector of Harvard College, Cambridge, about the progress of the mission among the American Indians. This edition is dedicated to John Eliot 'the indefatigable and faithfull minister of the church of Ripen', who converted many Indians to christianity, and translated the Bible into the Indian language. Then follows a dedication to the 24 converted Indians who became a minister, as Leusden states in his dedication, which is - according to Muller a 'valuable record of the early progress of Christianity among Indians of New England ... not mentioned by any bibliographer.' Next to this Hebrew-English edition a Hebrew-Latin version was published in the same year, both editions occurring with two different imprints: of the Hebrew-Latin edition there are copies with a London as well as a Utrecht imprint; this also the case for the Hebrew-English edition (other imprint: London, S. Smith, 1688). Both editions, however, were probably printed in Utrecht. In fact this is the second edition of Leusden's Hebrew psalm text; the first was published by Joseph Athias in Amsterdam in 1666 on 240, (3) ll. under the title Sefer tehilim (= Liber Psalmorum). Front cover loose; some minor foxing and small inkstains. Good copy.
Duker, Gisbertus Voetius, passim; Muller, America p. 416 (3491 under Mather); NNBW IX, cols. 601-2; ; STCN: only 3 copies with the London (printed in 1666) and 2 with the Utrecht imprint (printed in 1668).
