Extremely rare print series illustrating the Creed of the Apostles
LEU, Thomas de (or De LEEUW).XII fidei apostolici symbola iconibus artificiosiss. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Paris), Thomas de Leu, (ca. 1600). Oblong 4to. Modern marbled boards, spine with brown title label lettered in gold (HONNELAITRE). Engraved allegorical title (124 x 176 mm), 12 numbered engraved plates (ca. 130--5 x 172-8 mm) after designs of Johannes Sadeler/ Martin de Vos, engraved by Thomas de Leu, (last engraving with monogram IS) with one line verse beneath. 13 lvs. (168 x 225 mm). Fine series of 12 engravings illustrating the 12 lines of the Latin 'Credo Apostolorum' (the Creed of the Apostles). The plates are engraved by Thomas de Leu or De Leeuw (1560-1612) after the plates of the series engraved by Johannes Sadeler I (ca. 1550-ca. 1600), after the designs of Marten de Vos (1532-1603) and published in Amsterdam in 1579. Some plates are in reverse (f.e. plate 4), others are only slightly different (f.e. plate 8), compared to the plates of the series by Sadeler. Each plate contains a caption of one line of the Creed underneath, as opposed to the plates in the series by Sadeler, which show three columns with texts from the Old and New Testament, flanking the lines of the Creed. Thomas de Leu was a French or Flemish engraver and publisher who worked in Paris during the years 1576-1614 in the workshop of Jean Rabel. List of plates: 1. Credo in Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, Creatorem coeli et terrae (Creation; cf. Holstein 465). 2. Et in Iesum Christum, Filium eius unicum, Dominum nostrum (Transfiguration; cf. Holstein 466). 3. Qui conceptus est de Spiritu Sancto, natus ex Maria Virgine (Adoration of the shepherds; cf. Holstein 467). 4. Passus sub Pontio Pilato crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus. (Lamentation; cf. Holstein 468). 5. Descendit ad inferna: tertia die resurrexit a mortuis (Christ in Limbo; cf. Holstein 469). 6. Ascendit ad coelos, sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis (Christ in heaven; cf. Holstein 470). 7. Inde venturus est iudicare vivos et mortuos. (Last Judgment; cf. Holstein 471). 8. Credo in Spiritum Sanctum (Descent of the Holy Spirit; cf. Holstein 472). 9. Sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam, sanctorum communionem. (Apostles healing the sick and receiving gifts; cf. Holstein 473). 10. Remissionem peccatorum. (Peter preaching; cf. Holstein 474). 11. Very rare, fine series with a circular leather ex-libris of 'R.P(aultre)' with the motto 'Mihi hodie, cras tibi'.
