Contemporary marbled calf, spine in compartments, gilt-lined with gilt stamped ornaments. (24), 208; 248, (24) pp. First edition of the history of nepotism within the church at Rome, by Gregorio Leti, who has signed the dedication of the work to the Dutch scholar Jacob van Popta with his initials. Gregorio Leti (1630-1701) was an Italian historian, militant Italian protestant, and satirist from Milan, who sometimes published under the pseudonym Abbe Gualdi, known for his works about the Roman Catholic Church, especially the papacy. All of his publications were listed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Raised by the Jesuits and marked out for a career in the church at Rome, his conversion to protestantism caused a great scandal and Leti was forced to leave Italy. He resided in the court of Louis XIV of France and in 1680 in that of Charles II of England, who commissioned him to write a history of England. He wrote the first ever proper life of Elizabeth I of England, which includes many romantic embellishments about her youth and her mother, Anne Boleyn. After the publication of a collection of anecdotes which offended Charles II, Il Teatro Britannico, Leti fled England in 1683 for Amsterdam, where he became the city historiographer in 1685. He published a large number of historical works, not only on Italy, but also on Philips II of Spain, the House of Brandenburg, etc. The present work became very popular, and was also translated into Dutch (Het neefschap te Rome (1678)) and French (Le nepotisme de Rome (1669)). This first edition, in Italian, was published anonymously by the House of Elzevier, and is found listed in the stock-catalogues, published by Daniel Elsevier in 1675 and 1581. Good copy.- (Fronthinge weak, top of spine sl. dam.).
