(12), 375, (1); (2), 424; (2), 558, (2) pp. Original edition of the collected poetical works of a Dutch poetess, the 'Dutch sappho', as Katharyne Lescailje was called by her contemporaries. Katharyne Lescailje (1649-1711) was an Amsterdam poetess, translator and bookseller/publisher whose works appeared already during her lifetime - quite exceptional for a woman in those days. A second re-issue with another title-page were published in 1737. Katharyne is the daughter of the publisher, book seller and poet Jacob Lescailje (Lescaille; 1611-1679). In 1658 Jacob became the official printer of the Amsterdamse Schouburg (the Amsterdam Theatre). Dirk Rank (+1736), the husband of Katharyne's niece, joined the publishing house in 1712. Katrharyne has been very active in the Amsterdam poetical and theatrical scene and her oeuvre is as extensive as it is varied. She writes lyrical, political ('Staats-gevallen'), laudatory, devote, wedding poems, etc. She has translated a number of French stage plays which are published during her lifetime, and collected here in vol. 3. Contents: Vol. 1: Staatsgevallen (Political poems; pp. 3-60), Lofdichten (Laudatory poems; pp. 63-114), Afbeeldingen (Poems on portraits and views; pp. 117-28), Verjaargedichten (Birthday poems; pp. 131-240), and Mengeldichten (Miscellany poems; pp. 243-364). Vol. 2: Huwelykszangen (Weddings poems; pp. 3-314), Lyk- en grafdichten (Epitaphs; pp. 317-90), and Stichtelyke gedichten (Devote poems; pp. 395-414). Vol. 3: (Plays): Kassandra (by P. d'Assezan), Genserik (by madame Deshovlieres), Herodes and Marianne (by F. Tristan l'Hermite), Wenseslaus, koning van Poolen (by De Rotrou), Herkules en Dianira (by La Tuillerie), Nicomédes (by Corneille) and Ariadne (by T. Corneille). Six of the plays have been performed during her lifetime. The set is uniformly bound by a skilled bindery, the so-called Art Book Bindery, active in Amsterdam from 1705 till 1741, including work for the Amsterdam bibliophile Gosuinus Uilenbroek. Very good uniformly bound set.
