Leyden, D. du Mortier en Zoon, 1839. Contemp. boards. With vignette on title, numerous figures in text, and illustrations on 2 large folding woodcut plates, coloured by hand. 46, (2) pp.

First and probably only edition of an illustrated manual on a "calculation-machine with bars", invented by a school-teacher at Leyden, and meant to teach arithmetic in an easy and practical way. As the author explains in his preface, his calculation machine was based on the invention of "Nepar", a mathematician from Scotland, meaning of course Napier and his discovery of logarithms. Lempe adapted Napier's invention and constructed a machine with bars, by the use of which small children could make themselves familiar with numbers and number combinations in a clear and practical way, and by which older children could solve the most difficult arithmetical problems very easily.
As the author proudly announced, his arithmetical machine had been approved of by the school inspection, and by professor Jacob de Gelder. Lempe assured his readers, should of course stay in use, because the machine could not replace De Gelder's school-books, but could only be of use to solve the problems given in the books. The present manual explains as well as illustrates at length the working of the arithmetical device, and presents numerous examples for the use of the machine at all stages of arithmetical teaching.
