Paris, P. Blanchard, 1810. 12mo. Contemp. marbled calf, spine richly gilt, with red title-label, with gilt decorative borders on sides and large gilt device of the educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen" with small coat-of-arms of Amsterdam at top and surrounded by the legend. With illustration on engraved title, printed title, engraved frontispice, and 4 full-page engraved plates. 223 pp.

Second edition, published in the same year as the first, of a popular French adaptation for children of Defoe's "The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", in a fine prize-binding of the Amsterdam Department of the Dutch Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen". In his preface Henri Lemaire compares his "Petit Robinson" with Campe's "Robinson der Jüngere". But although they both aim at educating and instructing children, their books are quite different.
Lemaire choose to tell an exiting story of adventure, since the story itself according to him, if rightly told, contains in itself all the elements to instill in children the right sentiments by which they will act when grown up as true and honest people. Lemaire's "Petit Robinson" completely replaced in France Campe's "Le Nouveau Robinson".

Good copy.
Gumuchian 4937; NUC lists one copy; cf. Ullrich III, 3 (first ed. of 1810); "De Prijs is het Bewijs" 45 (similar prize-binding from 1824).
