Amsterdam, Erven van F. Houttuyn, 1776. 4 parts in 2 vols. 4to. Contemporary half calf, spines ribbed and gilt, with red morocco title-labels. With illustrations on 174 full-page engraved plates mostly by Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt (1733-1796) after the author, all beautifully coloured by hand. (8), 78; (4), 88; (4), 80; (4), 58, (12) pp.

The scarce, first complete Dutch edition of the collected works of Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769), lawyer, naturalist and scientist especially famous for his publications on microscopy. The translation is perhaps by M. Houttuyn. According to Horn-Schenkling, this edition combines al but 1 of Ledermüller's works, published separately in Nürnberg, mostly by Winterschmidt, 1759-1776. The main part comprises translations of Mikroskopische Gemüths- und Augenergötzung (1759-1760, with 100 plates), enlarged with Nachlese (...) (1762, with 50 plates) and Abgenöthigte verteidigung (...) (1765, with 2 plates). Of these three parts, Houttuyn published a Dutch edition in 3 vols. and with only 150 plates, in 1771. The present edition is enlarged with translations of 2 more works: Versuch bei angehender Frühlingszeit die Vergrößerungs-Werkzeuge zum nützlichen und angenehmen Zeitvertreib anzuwenden (1764, with 12 plates) and Letzte Beobachtungen seiner mikroskopischen Ergötzungen (...) nebst der Beschreibung und Abbilduing einen neuen un vollständigen Universal-Mikroskops (1776, with 8 plates). The numbering of the plates in our edition largely corresponds with the separate German editions: 100 plates in parts I and II and 50 plates in part III. In the final part, a total of 24 plates (only 22 plates in the German additions to the main parts).
The 174 beautiful plates, engraved by Winterschmidt after drawings by the author show a wide range of objects under magnification and according to the title-pages "met hunne natuurlyke kleuren afgebeeld", like insects, crystals, plants, minerals etc. The final chapter comprises a description of the newly invented microscope by Burucker ("instrumentmaaker te Neuremburg"), with 8 detailed plates.
