Very rare educational manual for the Christian Youth, magnificently bound for Jacobus Fagart
[LEBRUN, Laurent].Institutio Iuventutis Christianae. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Sebastianus & Gabrielis Cramoisy, 22 February 1653. 12mo. Contemporary light brown calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt, sides fully gilt, with richly gilt dentelle borders and arabesque ornaments in the four corners and large lozenge shaped arabesque ornament in centre, with a small oval medallion lettered 'Iacobus' on the front and 'Fagart' on the back cover, gilt binding edges, g.e. Engraved vignette with Saint Laurentius on title, woodcut headpieces and initials. (12), 268, (2, 2 blank) pp. Very rare original edition of a educational manual by Laurent Lebrun from Nantes (1608-1663), a Jesuit poet and author of a large number of Latin works, among which a famous poem on the colonization of Canada, from 1639. The author's name does not appear on the title, but he signed the dedication to the pupils of the Jesuit Collegium Claromontanum at Paris, for whose use the manual also was intended. The College was re-named 'Collège Louis le Grand' in 1682. The Latin manual offers the usual advice for the 'Education of Christian Youth', and treats in six parts the daily agenda, the agenda of feast days, social morals, the virtues of Christian youth, the dangers for Christian youth, and the protection against sin. Our copy is magnificently bound at the time in light brown morocco, richly gilt in the style of Le Gascon, and has its owner's name printed in gilt on both covers: 'Jacques Fagart', probably a wealthy pupil of the Collegium Claromontanum at Paris. Beautiful copy.
De Backer-Sommervogel IV, 1630, 7; NBG 30, cols. 133-4; only one copy found in VKK; not in Cioranescu; not in NUC.
